Malibu was first introduced in 1978. It was created by Thomas Jago of International Distillers & Vintners. The name was inspired by the famous Californian beach town, Malibu. It was originally designed to simplify the making of piña coladas for bartenders.
The recipe was originally made from fruit spirits, flavored with rum and coconut flavoring in Curaçao. When the product took off, production was moved to Barbados. Today, Malibu is produced in Canada, the US, and Spain. The brand was sold to Allied Domecq in 2002 and then to Pernod Ricard in 2005.
